Types of Carabiners
Oval carabiners are necessary for everyday trolley use in order to ensure proper orientation on the trolley. The oval shape orients the load evenly on the trolley and the gate opens wide for easy connection. There are some trolleys that are too wide for using oval carabiners.
Jake Carabiners are designed with a large mouth and sometimes with a side-swing gate as well. The Jake carabiners will typically be easier to use than oval carabiners due to this large size and pear shape.
D-Shape Carabiners are typically not best suited as main carabiners in a zip line riding gear set up due to their unique shape which leads to uneven loading of weight on the trolley.
STEEL V. ALUMINUM CARABINERS
For the main carabiners on your zip line you can use aluminum or steel carabiners with a locking mechanism. The aluminum carabiners have a strength rating of 4,000-5,000 lbs and the steel carabiners can be anywhere from 5,000-13,000 lbs. If you're looking for backup safety rigging, you will need steel carabiners for their strength and durability.
